The Heat is On…

You may read this title and at first thought, conclude I will be writing about the current summer weather.  Well, I can’t say you would be completely wrong, yet the topic has nothing to do with the intrinsic weather patterns we watch move across the earth’s atmosphere as seen on the weather channel.

It is summertime in the northern hemisphere.  Temperatures are rising, people are shedding layers of clothes to beat the heat, but more importantly, harvests are being gathered.

In my last blog, I wrote about doing the earthwork—the planting, preparation and nurturing of the dreams and plans for change you’ve longed for.

Well, since then, the climate may have changed.  The rains that watered the seed, keeping the ground moist so young roots could sprout, reach out and grasp the soil, have passed.  They have done their work and without delay, the days have become longer, the soil has warmed and the sun has intensified.  Pressure is on.

But it’s all for a reason.  Without the warmth of the sun on the soil, it would remain too moist, causing molds and fungi to develop and destroy the root system.  No, the sun is doing it’s work internally and externally.

Heat brings stress on the roots because it’s time to prepare for harvest.  It’s no longer about supplying nutrients for growth and green foliage.  It’s time to send the message of HARVEST!

The sun shines its rays upon the fruits in the trees, causing them to ripen.  Ripe fruit is appealing to the eye and an explosion of delight to the mouth.

You can tell the difference between the fruit of a tree or vine that was picked early, then transported and forced to ripen in a counterfeit environment along the way.  Its color is dim, texture is stagnant, and its flavor is a disappointment.  Yet, the fruit that hangs on the vine or the branch, sunning itself in the heat and cut off of the nutrients from the drying earth—matures.

When this fruit is picked, it warms the palm and its juices are felt below the brilliant colored surface as the fingers grasp its form.  Before reason can lead, the hand to mouth reflex results in a celebration and satisfaction of sheer delight as an explosion occurs within the mouth.  There is nothing like eating something ripe and right off the branch or the vine.

It’s what you’ve waited for.  It is what you have expected each time you looked out into the garden.  The planning, preparing and nurturing of soil and seed has brought forth its reward.  Yet, without the intense pressure of the sun and the changes to the environment it brings, there is no maturing of the fruit.  There is no ripening and no enjoyment of the harvest.  Without the natural process, the fruit never achieves its designed outcome.

To expedite or hurry the process is to modify the outcome, resulting in a counterfeit result.  When we repeatedly manipulate the process, overtime we create an impatient appetite for the artificial.  We can’t recall the real experience that brings great satisfaction or we become embittered by the lack of choice and opportunity to have the real thing.

So, what season are YOU in?  Is it hot outside?  Is the temperature rising?  Do you notice the lack of nutrition and support from your environment?  Is the heat on?  Maybe you are hearing the message of HARVEST.  Maybe the change you are sensing and fearing is something you should yield to, in order to mature and ripen.  Maybe the heat is there to bring forth the change you have waited for, expected and labored to produce.

The farmer knows when it is time to pick the fruit.  His eyes catch the brilliant color from a distance and his touch senses the true metamorphosis held within, …and the fragrance.  There is a sweet aroma that rises in the heat of the day and lingers in the cool of the night.

It’s harvest time.  Hold on.  Hang on.  It’s coming.  Don’t grow weary in your mind.  Stay the course.  The heat is on and it is bringing the harvest of your dreams.
